Peter Thorning is a co-managing partner of Brauti Thorning Zibarras. Peter practices principally in the areas of criminal law, regulatory defence, and professional discipline.

Peter received his Bachelor of Arts (Honours) from York University in 1993 and his LL.B. from Queen’s University in 1998. He was called to the Ontario Bar in 2000.

As a former Federal Crown Attorney, Peter is a very experienced trial and appellate counsel. He has appeared at all levels of court in the province of Ontario as well as the Federal Court of Canada and the Tax Court of Canada. He has also participated in a number of inquest matters. His experience includes hundreds of trials and appeals. He has also lectured to police officers on search and seizure law.

As a defence lawyer, Peter has successfully represented many professionals including police officers, doctors, lawyers, dentists, and teachers. Peter has defended clients charged with various offences including murder, attempted murder, drug offences, tax evasions, fraud, human trafficking, sexual assault, assault and impaired driving offences.

Peter is a member of the Criminal Lawyers’ Association.

    Judge orders a new trial in assault case A judge has ordered a new trial for Toronto criminal lawyer Peter Thorning’s client and ruled that the trial judge "improperly intervened" and compromised the fairness of the proceedings.

    "He usurped the function of Crown counsel," Justice Robert F. Goldstein wrote in his decision. "He intervened improperly in the cross-examination."

    Criminal organization exploited man: Thorning. Toronto criminal lawyer Peter Thorning says his client, a man sentenced for conspiring to import cocaine, is remorseful for his actions and was ruthlessly exploited by a criminal organization.
